South West of Sydney CBD, at a distance of 42 kilometres lies the suburb of Macquarie Fields, boasting a population of over 13,000 residents. It is a suburb with a long history having been established in 1883. The land it occupies was once inhabited by the Darug Aboriginal tribe until the arrival of the First Fleet in 1788, when white settlements caused them to move further away. The suburb is home to a mix of nationalities and is surrounded by bushland with abundant wildlife calling it home. The suburb was so named in honour of the early Governor Lachlan Macquarie by the landowner at that time.
There are a few different areas of Sydney that carry the Macquarie name which gives us an idea of the esteem that people had for him. Macquarie Fields is well serviced by both rail and bus transport allowing easy access to destinations. There is a large area of public housing set up by the Housing Commission as well as many private homes within the suburb both of which made more infrastructure necessary for these residents. With two high schools and three state schools available, the educational needs for students are well provided.
For those looking to buy or rent in this area there are real estate agencies that have both, many of the rentals being handled by property management in Sydney. With ample shopping, schools and a great transport system it is a convenient area for families with school age children. The suburb is serviced by the Glenquarie Shopping Centre which has specialist stores, supermarkets and also discount department stores. It is only a short drive to the city when you just want a day out in the big smoke. A variety of restaurants with some specialising in international cuisine plus cafƩs and takeaway outlets should keep the food lovers well satisfied with the number of choices available.
As well as a few outdoor sporting fields for action games, there is the Macquarie Leisure Centre which is quite large, and contains a gymnasium and indoor sports centre. For cooling off in summer there is a large indoor aquatic centre, and for those who like to train, the centre also has an outdoor Olympic sized pool. For those who are sport lovers and also the keep fit type, this suburb has everything to keep them happy. With all the needed infrastructure available it would make a great place to settle down for families, singles, couples and retirees. Macquarie Fields would be a great place to call home.
